Conditions
Wednesday Grooming Update
Blue skies with temps in the 20s, great day of skiing at Mecca. Trails haven’t been groomed since the weekend but conditions were good. Coverage very good, some thin spots but easily avoidable. Skate lanes pretty level and firm, just enough loose snow for your kick. Tracks firm, no icing.
Sunday Grooming Update
Trails are 95% snow covered with some thin areas. Skate lanes are combed, mostly level; tracks are set with some thin area. Definitely early season conditions but very skiable and fast.
Skiers today reported conditions were fair to good.
Weekend Grooming Report
MECCA got 2-3” of snow on Thursday and grooming teams were out on Friday morning and afternoon. Tracks were set on 75% of the trails, with a shallow base there’s some debris in the tracks. The entire skate lane was combed, is clean, and a little soft.
Weekend Trail Update
Groomers were out yesterday and today leveling and combing the 21k trail system. Early season conditions are rated at fair plus. The skiing surface is firm and has well formed corduroy with 95% coverage. At this time, tracks have not been set because of the lack of snow depth. The Homestead Wetland has not completely froze resulting in some soft spots but is skiable. Groomers will attempt to groom this section early next week. Overall, the trail is very skiable, skiers will be surprised at the conditions. Snowshoe trails are open.
First Snowfall of the Season!
The MECCA Ski and Snowshoe Trails recently received approximately six to seven inches of lake effect snow. Groomers are currently rolling this first of the season measurable snowfall. There is not sufficient snow to set track. Skiing is very marginal; for those of you needing a skiing fix, rock skis are recommended.
Registration for our Winterfest events is now open!

Fall Volunteer Work
Thanks to our volunteers for filling the woodshed in preparation for the upcoming winter season! Volunteers: Janet Dowdall and her husband, Kris and John Bitner, and Diane OKrongly
Chalet Updates
11 volunteers stained the chalet, storage building, gas shed, and outdoor tables and benches all before lunch. Our volunteers rock! After the work was done all enjoyed a lunch of grilled brats, chips, and watermelon.
Thanks for the hard work!
It’s blackberry season!
And it’s a super year for them… Best in a decade-or-two. Get out there and pick them before I eat them all. Be sure to spit any seeds stuck in your teeth off the side of the trail so they have a chance to grow without getting mowed down.
You can freeze the ones you take home to eat all winter, or bake a pie…
May Update
MECCA’s Next Monthly Meeting –
Tuesday, June 4th, 2024, 5:00 PM at the Chalet
Timber Harvests –
A few sections of the MECCA Trail System has and will be affected by timber harvests conducted by the WI DNR and Iron County Forestry. Attached is a map depicting the DNR’s timber harvest which is nearly completed except for forwarding and trucking the timber off the property. As you can see on the map, the aspen harvest was conducted in the area of the Moose and Osprey Loops.
The Iron County Forestry pine harvest will affect the south end of the Homestead Loop. This harvest should be starting in late May or early June.
MECCA is working with WI DNR and Iron County Forestry to remediate the impacts to the ski trails. If hiking the trails, the best advice is to stay clear of the operations.
