The Mercer area received approximately 3” of new snow overnight. The grooming team will be rolling the trails over the next couple of days. No tracks will be set, we still need more snow to make the trails skiable.

The Mercer area has been receiving lake effect snow on and off throughout the day. As you can see in the mid-day photo, the snow is about to cover the grass, it’s a positive start! Trails that cross wetlands have refroze again after the warm up over Christmas. MECCA’s Winterfest Event featuring MECCA 30 K, Flowage 15K and the Claire d’Loon 5 K races is 17 days away, we are hopeful for a combination of lake effect snow and a couple of winter storms will bring sufficient snow to have the event.

The wreath has been hung (thanks to Peggy and Bernie), the firewood is cut, the skis are waxed, the Chalet is warm, and the Gator is ready; however, the Mercer Area is still waiting for cold weather and snow. We will keep you posted.

MECCA volunteers are ready to start grooming as soon as the weather cooperates. It’s been cold at night, so our wetlands should be frozen, but we’ve only had a few inches of snow. Stay tuned!

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving has become known as “Giving Tuesday”, an initiative to encourage supporters to generously donate time and money to organizations within their community. Late summer has welcomed trail users with the absence of bothersome insects (almost) and the soft maples showing a hint of red in its leaves telling us fall is around the corner. There is a good chance of getting startled by the flushing of a grouse or getting a closeup look at a fawn deer and its mother.

Trails are in good hiking condition with a dry trail tread and moderately short grass. There are two wetlands within the trail system, one on the Moose Loop and the other on Homestead which requires trail users to adjust their routes. To access the entire trail system, study the trail map and take advantage of the recently installed boardwalk on the southeast side of the Moose Loop.

Tonight’s grooming effort will be the last of our season since the spring freeze thaw cycle has become too much for our groomers. Since November 30th, the MECCA trail system has been groomed 98 times, with our last groom on March 24th. The Chalet will be open through Sunday, March 26th.

Enjoy one last ski tomorrow morning before temps are above freezing. As ski trails begin to deteriorate, snowshoe trails will remain open and are perfect for a spring adventure.
