Wolf and Warmup loops are rolled but in rough conditions. The Flowage trailhead is closed due to trees down near the parking lot. Groomers and Volunteers will be out for the next few days to prepare other trails and remove downed trees.
Storm Update, Live at 5, Toy Drive & Maintenance Building Open House
Wow, did the Mercer area get hit with a major snowstorm, approximately 25″ fell over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Currently we are experiencing lake effect snow with more coming this weekend. It’s all good but it will be very challenging for MECCA Groomers to get the trail in shape for skiing because of the snow depth coupled with the many trees that came down in the storm – we are asking for your patience. We have not yet determined if our equipment is large enough to get through the deep snow but we will come up with a solution! We are hoping by the end of next week trails will be skiable, we will keep you posted. Snowshoe trails are open however we have not seen any hearty souls breaking trails as of yet!
On Wednesday, December 3rd, MECCA and the Mercer FIre and EMS Departments are co-sponsoring the Mercer Chamber of Commerce “Live at 5” event at the Chalet Trailhead. The event is in conjunction with the Iron County Fire Association annual toy drive, attendees are encouraged to bring an unwrapped holiday gift for kids ages infants through teens.
The evening should be invigorating with an outside bonfire, snacks and refreshments and an “open house” of the club’s new heated equipment building. See you there MECCA supporters!
“SPECIAL EVENT at MECCA”

Hiking at MECCA
Hiking MECCA Trails throughout the year is a great destination to enjoy woodland flowers blooming such as marsh marigolds, American violets, yellow trout lily, bloodroot and a favorite, the trillium. The Little Turtle Flowage, on the west end of the trail system, provides an impressive viewscape of a 640-acre marsh. This habitat is home to trumpeter swans, bald eagles, osprey and sandhill cranes. If you are hiking in the early evening don’t be surprised to see a migrating woodcock or ruffed grouse launching into the air right in front of you!
As a reminder, sections of the Moose and Homestead trails have wetlands which cannot be crossed until it freezes over. There are two boardwalks, one on Moose and the other on Homestead Trail which facilitate access to the west portion of the trail system.
Be tick & mosquito smart while on the trail – prevent bites by wearing protective clothing and repellent. Be sure to check for ticks during and after your hike.

Tuesday Trail Report
Grooming activity has been suspended for the season. The freeze-thaw cycle results in icy, fast, and dangerous conditions when overnight temps drop. Surface conditions soften as the temps go up, but icy spots remain in shaded areas. Trails have snow cover in the woods and bare spots in open areas.

Weekend Trail Report
Mercer got 3-5” of snow in the past 24 hours. The grooming team was out this morning resetting tracks, which are mostly deep and firm. Skate lane was combed, surface is a mix of soft and firm. Conditions are mostly very good. Freeze-Thaw cycle started with warmer weather earlier this week, so the base has several thin and icy spots.
